I’m featuring the book Double Bass Blues by Andrea J. Loney. This Caldecott Honor Award Winner in 2019 and tells the story of a boy walking home from school with his double bass to join his grandfather in making music. The text is made up of mostly sound effects with some brief dialogue, but the story is told through the pictures. Early in the school year, I always teach my students the value of “reading” a story by looking at the pictures. This may seem intuitive, but it’s not always something that children know how to do without instruction. Books like Double Bass Blues are the perfect way to teach this skill because if you only hear the text, you cannot understand what’s happening in the story.
